Every time i tryed to start a new game, an error occured, stating, that the engine.exe stopped, and the program exited. Recently I also had a problem with this game. Pirates of the Caribbean problems with ENGINE.exe: In my case a simple software, called SwiftShader2.0 solved it!!! Play without whis mode, because in my system it wasn't performing well, and anyway, i wanted to play with the original game.
This may also solve your problems, because as far as i know the developpers of this mode made it work on modern systems.
